Background of the Study: Post-transplant infection control is critical to the success of organ transplantation, as transplant recipients are at high risk for infections due to their immunosuppressive therapy (Ogunyemi et al., 2024). Nurses play a pivotal role in ensuring that patients adhere to infection control protocols after transplantation, as they are responsible for post-operative care, monitoring, and educating patients about hygiene, medication adherence, and infection prevention measures (Kazeem & Adebayo, 2023). In Benue State, however, there is limited research on the knowledge and adherence of nurses to infection control protocols in transplant recipients. Given the increasing number of organ transplants being performed in the state, it is essential to evaluate nurses’ understanding of post-transplant infection control practices.

The study aims to evaluate the knowledge of nurses regarding infection control measures for transplant patients and assess their adherence to these protocols in Benue State hospitals. Understanding the gaps in knowledge and practice will help to improve patient outcomes by ensuring that appropriate measures are in place to prevent infections in post-transplant patients.

Statement of the Problem: Post-transplant infections remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among organ transplant recipients (Adebola et al., 2023). Nurses are central to minimizing the risk of infection by implementing effective infection control practices, yet there is concern that knowledge and adherence to these protocols may be insufficient. This study seeks to evaluate the level of knowledge and adherence to infection control protocols among nurses working with transplant patients in Benue State hospitals and to explore potential barriers to effective infection control.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the level of knowledge among nurses about infection control protocols for post-transplant patients in Benue State hospitals.
  2. To evaluate the adherence of nurses to infection control protocols in the care of post-transplant patients.
  3. To identify barriers to adherence to infection control protocols in the management of post-transplant patients.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses about infection control protocols for post-transplant patients in Benue State hospitals?
  2. How well do nurses adhere to infection control protocols in the care of post-transplant patients?
  3. What barriers hinder nurses from adhering to infection control protocols in the care of post-transplant patients?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurses with higher levels of knowledge about infection control protocols have better adherence to these protocols in post-transplant care.
  2. Adherence to infection control protocols is significantly associated with better patient outcomes in post-transplant care.
  3. Barriers such as inadequate training and lack of resources are negatively correlated with nurses’ adherence to infection control protocols.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: The study will focus on nurses working in transplant units in hospitals across Benue State. It will evaluate their knowledge and adherence to infection control protocols. Limitations include the possibility of self-report bias and the exclusion of hospitals without transplant units.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Post-transplant infection control protocols: Measures taken to prevent infections in transplant patients, including hygiene practices, medication adherence, and monitoring.
  • Knowledge and adherence: The understanding of infection control protocols and the extent to which nurses implement these protocols in their practice.
  • Barriers: Factors that prevent nurses from adhering to infection control protocols, such as lack of training, resources, or time.
